Jory Peppelaar wrote, “On September 17th, six HOBY alumni held a community leadership workshop in Richfield Utah. The theme for the workshop was ‘Set the Example’. The workshop went from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and consisted of several different activities. The HOBY alumni in charge were as follows: Brianna McPhail, Neccia Sirrine, Jory Peppelaar, Tyler Barton (2011 alumni), Lauren Resendes and Morgan Aston (2010 alumni). 45 students attended the conference. The conference began with some warm up games and then with a speaker. The speaker, Ann Parkinson, played a game and had those in attendance participate in a game of jeopardy to help describe setting the example through service.

After the speaker some leadership activities began. The participants were split up into groups and brought to a taped circle with a tennis ball placed on a cup in the center. They were then asked to retrieve the tennis ball from inside the circle without stepping in the circle or letting the tennis ball hit the floor. They had thirty minutes to figure it out. The first team to complete the challenge managed to do it in 10 minutes with the other teams coming shortly after. Next was a quick break where snacks were handed out. The snacks were donated by Fresh Market. Participants were then selected to interview panelists that were entering.

The panel, consisting of Dennis Jorgenson, Hayley Tebbs, Lani Baker, and Delise Fullmer, gave great advice on how to set the example and really got all the students motivated.

The final event was a service project. The HOBY alumni set up a project with Utah’s Volunteer Connection agency. The six country area was represented by Shara Bastian, who set up the project to make care packages for the military. Shara,
bringing in some volunteers of her own, worked closely with the CLeW members to make almost 250 care packages.
Alumni and students in attendance describe the conference as the event that made them really think and really made them want to set the example for their communities. It was an experience that hopefully none of them forget.”

Schools in attendance:
